Before it closed for the season, Millcreek Common’s ice skate loop held an Abilities Day for Special Olympics athletes and others.
“We partnered with Special Olympics and Salt Lake County Adaptive to give opportunities to skaters who don’t typically have it,” said Jamie Wilner, the ice skating director and community life manager at Millcreek Common. “It gives Special Olympic athletes as well as adaptive athletes the chance to try opportunities for the first time.”
“Salt Lake County Adaptive brought out their sleds for hockey and they were teaching people how to use the sled and use sticks and we had some skating lessons too,” Wilner. “It was really fun.”
Other activities included curling, speed skating and racing. Many folks came out to cheer on the Special Olympic athletes. There was even an ice skating performance to watch.
Giorgia Birkeland, a former U.S Olympic long track speedskater, was at the ice ribbon. “I am out to support the event and always up for an opportunity to skate,” said Birkeland, who is taking time away from competing in the sport to attend college. “I will always love speed skating.”
“We just want to make sure that people understand that inclusivity includes all ability levels,” Wilner said.
The ice ribbon ended the winter season mid-March and will return in November. The skating loop is now open for roller skating at Millcreek Common daily at 11 a.m. More information about costs and rentals can be found at millcreekcommon.org.
