Cottonwood Heights residents have opportunities to bring in the spring with a handful of community gardening-focused events. Seed libraries will be available at various Salt Lake County Library branches throughout the month of April. Gardeners and hobbyists can then learn how to utilize those seeds with water-wise landscaping through a series of community courses (April 2 for Cottonwood Heights). In addition, the annual city Sapling Sale has been scheduled for April 25.

“The Seed Library opened on March 20. Let’s get growing together,” said Maggie Mills, Branch Manager for Whitmore Library.

Until April 30, the Seed Library will be available for gardeners to utilize. Seeds for vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers can be picked up and grown for harvest. The library just asks for any seeds at the end of harvest season to be returned for next year’s Seed Library.

Whitmore's Seed Library is an extension of the Salt Lake County Library’s initiative. Seed Libraries will also be available at various surrounding branches including Holladay, Millcreek, Sandy and South Jordan, among others.

Whitmore Library is open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Whitmore is located at 2197 E. Fort Union Blvd.

On April 2, a Localscapes: Creating Your Ideal Utah Yard will be held for Cottonwood Heights residents to learn how to implement water-wise landscaping in their yards. Students will be introduced to practical usability design principles and available rebates through Utah Water Savers programs.

Creating Your Ideal Utah Yard will be taught by local landscape professionals who have focused specifically on the challenges of the Utah landscape. The course begin at 6 p.m. at Cottonwood Heights City Hall (2277 Bengal Blvd.).

This course will be taught at least six more times throughout the month of April for residents in the Taylorsville, Murray and Millcreek communities. The Localscapes community classes are hosted in partnership with Conservation Garden Park and Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District.

The annual Sapling Sale, sponsored by Cottonwood Heights, is scheduled for April 25. Residents will be able to pick up tree saplings at-cost at Cottonwood Heights City Hall (2277 Bengal Blvd.) beginning at 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. (as of press deadline).

Trees will only be available as supplies last. As this event has been becoming more popular over the past two years, the Cottonwood Heights Community and Economic Staff typically ask residents to pre-register early. Identification will be required. Look out for noticing on this event through the city’s website or social media pages.
