in 2012, Governor Gary Herbert signed a bill that makes skiing and snowboarding Utah's official winter sports. During January, resorts offer special prices on packages that include rental equipment, lessons and lift ticket.

Alta's special package for beginners is good in January and also for the rest of the season. And it can be used four times to really get you enjoying the sport. Brighton's Learner Package is for those 13 and up. It includes rental equipment, a 2 hour group lesson, and a full-day learner lift ticket. It's good weekdays Monday through Friday and you have a choice of a morning or afternoon lesson. Price: $49. For more information or to register online:

Deer Valley's Learn to Ski Program for first time local skiers is scheduled for one day -- Saturday, January 25. The package is for those 13 and older and includes a lesson, lift ticket, ski rental equipment and locker/basket check storage. This lesson starts at 12:45 p.m. and end at 4 p.m. Price: $49. Reservations must be made prior to January 25, 2020, by calling Deer Valley Resort at 435-645-6648, referring to the "Ski Utah Learn to Ski Program".

Snowbird. Learn to ski or ride and find out what all your friends are talking about! The 2-1/2 hour lesson starts at 1pm. For ages 16 and over. Price: $50 (Bounce-back rates available) The program is offered Monday through Thursday in january. Book by calling 801-947-8222 and asking for the Learn a Snowsport promotion.

Solitude. The Learner Package includes rental equipment, helmet, 2-1/2 hour lesson and lift ticket. It's for Utah residents who are 13 and older. Price: $49. Call Solitude Mountain Resort at 801-536-5730 and refer to the "Ski Utah Learn to Ski and Snowboard Program.

Sundance. The Learner package include rental equipment, 2-1/2 hour morning lesson, and a full day lift ticket. Price: $49. Offer can only be purchased online
